Ario de Rosales, cradle of the Duarte family, rests in a warm valley of southern Michoacán. Its cobblestone streets, parish church, and plaza have watched generations come and go; in 1818 it was the setting of the Constitución de Ario, a milestone in Mexico's history. Here — among orchards, market days, and church bells — our grandmother Herlinda Duarte Reyes grew up.
