Many Tierra Caliente families knew the North by ear before they knew it by sight. The letter would arrive, tight handwriting on an envelope worn soft from the road, and it would be read out loud at home, twice.
“Nobody said ‘he’s leaving.’ They said ‘he’s going to try his luck.’ And we all knew that trying your luck meant throwing your whole heart at the distance.”
The goodbye happened before dawn, out on the dirt road, in the first gray light. Blessings were given, errands handed out — “tell him…”, “say that…”, “send me a photo” — and the truck lifted the dust of the road.
And the return: the suitcases full, the voices changed by the other language, the gifts wrapped in shiny paper. But the table was the same table, and the mole was the same mole.
